“Buddhist Layman Vimalakīrti”, Hanging scroll, ink on paper. The artist is Zen Master Hakuin Ekaku, 1685–1769, Japan. Asian Collection, The Minneapolis Art Museum.
“Thus have I heard… “
One of the seminal Mahayana texts, the Vimalakirti Sutra stands-out among the revered manuscripts of Buddhism for its conciseness, humor, dramatic narratives and eloquent exposition of nondualism and emptiness. Distinct from most sutras, the Vimalakirti’s principal figure is not a Buddha, rather, an affluent layman, whose mastery of doctrine and religious practice, remains esteemed by both monastics and laity.
Join us for these two opportunities to read aloud this inspiring Buddhist text. Two Reading: April 5th and 19th, 1 to 5 p.m. at the McGowan House Zendo, Monterey.
