Dōgen wrote in Shoaku-makusa (Refrain from Unwholesome Action), “clarifying birth, clarifying death, is the matter of greatest importance for a Buddhist.” Using several fascicles by Dōgen, a selection of koans, the death stories of some of our ancestors, including Buddha’s, Dongshan’s, and Dogen’s among others, and our own experience, we will delve into and explore Buddhist teachings on Birth and Death through study and practice.
