We will continue with our normal format of 20 minutes of zazen then 10 minutes of brief check in prior to talking about how we've been engaging with the last precept we set up. There will be 30 minutes for this so that we'll start setting up the next precept at 5 pm. The remaining schedule will be as follows:

April 18 — Discuss Not Harboring Ill-will/Letting Go of Anger & set up Not Disparaging but Honoring the Triple Treasure Anderson ch. 22, Loori p. 105
April 25 — Discuss Not Disparaging but Honoring the Triple Treasure & set up how to carry/continue precepts practice into everyday life or Taking Refuge in the Triple Treasure Anderson ch. 7, Loori ch. 5
According to Suzuki Roshi, the precepts are an expression of our original nature, rather than rules or an abstract code of ethics. Studying the precepts heightens awareness of how ethical behavior can inform and enliven our daily words and actions, assist us at work, and in our interactions with friends, family, and the wider world. In meeting the ethical challenges of modern life, the Bodhisattva Precepts offer a clear and engaged path of practice and show us what the heart and mind of Zen look like when immersed in the world.
Taught by senior students of Monterey Bay Zen Center, we will explore practicing the precepts with ourselves, our communities and with all of life. Texts include “Being Upright” by Tenshin Reb Anderson, Roshi; “The Heart of Being: Moral and Ethical Teaching of Zen Buddhism,” by John Daido Loori, Roshi; and “Waking Up to What You Do” by Diane Eshin Rizzetto.
$10 -- $20 sliding scale per class.
