In this introductory class we will explore a concise history of Zen, some of the basic elements of Zen teachings and practice, and its relevance to our daily lives. The Soto school emphasizes meditation, as everyone is already inherently enlightened. Zazen, or Shikantaza in the Soto school, is an expression of this enlightenment.
Soto Zen is also characterized by its to the enactment of Zen in everyday life, encouraging awareness of the “ workings of one’s own mind as means of living mindfully in all areas of daily life—at home, work and in the community,” writes the Soto Zen Buddhist Association.
